Kornati are the most dense group of islands in the whole of the Mediterranean. It is located between the Islands of Žirje, Dugi otok and Pašman. The arcipelago is divided into two groups: Lower Kornati consisting of islands Kornat and surrounding islands and Upper Kornati made of Sit, Žut and surrounding islands.
Kornati is the group of 152 islands, 89 of them were declared a national park in 1980. because of extraordinary beauty of landscape, the abundance of natural bays and the rich sea flora and fauna.
Most impressive natural phenomena on Kornati are cliffs, facing open sea. The highest cliffs can be found on the island of Klobučar (80 m high). The cliffs can reach even up to 100 m under water.
Another attraction on Kornati are straits Mala and Vela Proversa (the Small and Great Proversa). Mala Proversa is actually a shallow, dug through for sailing even in Roman times, any archaeological findings can still be seen there.
Unique thing to be seen is the so-called Vela ploča or Magazinova škrila (9,100m2 large), bear surface of limestoen, located near Metlina (the highest peak on Koranti 237 m high).
If you are visiting Kornati for the fist time, you will notice hundreds of metres of the so-called "dry walls". Walls maid of stone, to keep the land and to protect their pasture ground, and to prevent sheep from crossing from one pasture into the other.
On the island Kornat length of these walls reaches up to 70 km.
In the plain of Tarac you can fine the Church of our Lady of Tarac, the Queen of the Sea, which was build on remains of an early Christian church from the 16th century. There is also fortress Tureta, build around 6.A.D
Kornati Islands are not permenently inhabited, now there labourere´s and fishermen´s houses have been made into restaurant or accommodation, and are definitly favourite destination for navigaoturs, divers but also for all other tourists looking for beautiful natures.
